If you’re stuck at home with the kids over the school holidays, here are 5 family friendly fun ideas for the school holidays you can fall back on when, the cries of “I’m bored” get a bit much. Here is a list of ideas for those of you who live in Cape Town and you won’t even need a car as all of them are close to public transport hubs.
Taking the bus or train is often half the adventure when traveling with kids so make the most of it and be sure to factor in enough traveling time. Since the weather in Cape Town can lean towards being wet and windy, I will make sure this list isn’t dependent on sunny days.

Let’s start with what can be accessed by public transport and close to the city center. When last have you visited The Castle of Good Hope? I know that I was embarrassed to admit that I went for the first time last year. That was after living in Cape Town for 36 years. The shame!
Since we’re working on proximity and the Cape Town City library is across the road, check out your local library. I see many local libraries are running holiday programmes for the kids from the 29th of June to the 17th of July 2015. My kids love going to the holiday programme at our local library and they often learn how to make crafts or sometimes just listen to a story.
Speaking of holiday programmes, the iZiko Museum usually also offer holiday programmes for school going kids. My children have taken part a number of times and have learned about bees, the albatross and dinosaurs.
While we are still in Cape Town CBD, how about taking the younger kids to watch Noddy at Artscape? There is a show at 10:30am every day from 26 June to 10 July (except on Sundays).
If your kids have been out of nappies for over a decade, they might enjoy a trip to the Zip Zap Circus that has a 3pm show every Saturday from April to September.
